God Bless America

Early on the morning of September 11, 2001, 19 hijackers took control of four commercial airliners (two Boeing 757 and two Boeing 767) en route to California (three headed to LAX in Los Angeles, and one to San Francisco) after takeoffs from Boston, Massachusetts; Newark, New Jersey; and Washington, D.C. Large planes with long flights were selected for hijacking because they would be heavily fueled.

The four flights were:
  • American Airlines Flight 11: Left Boston's Logan Airport at 7:59a.m. en route to Los Angeles with a crew of 11 and 76 passengers, not including five hijackers. The hijackers flew the plane into the North Tower of the World Trade Center at 8:46a.m.
  • United Airlines Flight 175: Left Logan Airport at 8:14a.m. en route to Los Angeles with a crew of nine and 51 passengers, not including five hijackers. The hijackers flew the plane into the South Tower of the World Trade Center at 9:03a.m.
  • American Airlines Flight 77: Left Washington Dulles International Airport in Virginia at 8:20a.m. en route to Los Angeles with a crew of six and 53 passengers, not including five hijackers. The hijackers flew the plane into the Pentagon at 9:37a.m.
  • United Airlines Flight 93: Left Newark International Airport at 8:42a.m. en route to San Francisco, with a crew of seven and 33 passengers, not including four hijackers. As passengers attempted to subdue the hijackers, the aircraft crashed into the ground near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, at 10:03a.m.

  1. I always forget it was 19 hijackers until I read the reminders. I read a really good book about 9-11 called 102 Minutes: The Untold Story of the Fight to Survive Inside the Twin Towers. It was life-changing.

  9. It was so sad. It was also hard to shield my young children from seeing too much, although i did try. It's hard enough for grown-ups to understand this behavior.

  10. Want to read a great post about 9/11? Visit Cranky HERE. Here's a peek of part of his post:

Immediately it became clear what was happening. Terrorists! Arab Terrorists! Those “holier than thou, we know better than you, the great Satan accusing, Jew hating, backward, stupid, violent religion of peace and love, fanatical, perverted, sick faction of the Muslim world” TERRORISTS!

  12. By late morning of September 11, 2001, I think I finally almost knew what it felt like to be listening to the radio on December 7, 1941. Always remembered, and not forgiven EVER are those who did it and continue to try again.

  13. I watched it happen live on the news and part of me couldn't believe what I was watching. My husband picked up our girls from school and we huddled together not knowing what would happen. It was a friekish day.

    1. It was an awful day indeed. I was the commander of the honor farm and called all the inmates back in from their work assignments all over the county. We just didn't know if there were going to be more incidents. :)

  21. A very nice tribute, Sandee. I will always remember watching the whole thing on TV.

Also I remember the U.S. government payments ($M's) to the families of the victims who died. That was wrong. Why weren't those large amounts also paid to the victims of the New Orleans hurricane and to the families of each of those G.I's. who were killed in our Iraq and other wars? It wasn't fair, it wasn't necessary.

  22. Thank you Sandee for this post. Some folks would like to re-write what truly happened and attempt to blame the USA for what happened. Not me. I am with you- I will never forget who did this and they still continue to try.

  23. I remember seeing it here on the news & I just couldn't believe what I was seeing. It shocked the whole world not just America & it's people.
Acts of terrorism just make no sense to the average person when innocent people are killed for no valid reason other than being in the wrong place at the wrong time by terrorists who are nothing but cowardly lowlife scum. Australian Police & security forces a few days ago uncovered a plan by a terrorist cell, as they called them, to abduct & behead a random person on the streets of Sydney & publicly behead them. A random person who would've just been walking along the street minding their own business. A man, woman or child who has nothing to do with any of this insane madness. Where is the sense in that??? What can such acts as that, 9/11 & other acts of terror ever hope to achieve by the perpetrators??? I just can't comprehend the "WHY???" of it all. Words fail me & I cannot fully explain the disgust I feel for such scum. I'll stop now 'cos I'm getting angry just thinking about it.
