Opening Day I

In February hubby and I attended the Pacific Inter-Club Yacht Association (PICYA) leadership conference at Benicia Yacht Club. These conferences are very important for those folks that are going through the chairs in their yacht clubs. During this conference hubby and I decided we would be silver sponsors for the PICYA Opening Day on the Bay boat parade. We wrote a check for $500 and never thought much about it after that. We had already sent in our RSVPs for seating on the committee boat for this years parade. This was our first year to participate in opening day.

Some weeks later we received a call from Linda Breninger, Vice Commodore of PICYA asking us if we would like to be seated at her table for the day. What an honor this was. Of course we said yes.

Several days later we heard from Linda Breninger again asking us if we would like to come to her husbands surprise birthday party at the Doubletree @ Berkeley Marina. Of course we would love to do this too. Since Dave likes a good Chardonnay we got him a nice bottle of Rombauer and a card.

Saturday afternoon hubby and I left home and traveled to the bay area. We checked into our hotel room around 3:30pm and then walked over to Encinal Yacht Club for a bite to eat. After that we ventured down to the docks to visit some friends that were decorating their boat for the annual Opening Day on the Bay boat parade. Another couple also attending Dave's surprise birthday party had their boat at Encinal YC and around 5:15 the four of us headed to the Doubletree Hotel in Berkeley.

By the time everyone showed up for cocktails there were 8 couples. Dave was indeed surprised and we all had a great dinner at the restaurant. It was a fun evening of great food and friendship that just happens when you get a bunch of boaters together. It was time to head back to our hotel and get some sleep as we were scheduled to leave the hotel at 8:00am sharp and head for pier 3 in San Francisco. To say this was exciting for us was an understatement, and the biggest thrills were yet to come.

Tomorrow: Opening Day on the Bay - Part II

  3. I like good Chardonnay too, but I'll take bad if it's free. Would my 14ft. aluminum pirogue qualify as a yacht there?

  4. Did you take your boat?

  5. This is exciting. Can't wait to read more. What a great thing by supporting the group. Your generosity never ceases to amaze me. You give me faith in people during a time when we seem to lose it more than we should.

Hope there are pictures?! A boat parade sounds really cool, and not like anything I've seen in my years on the water. Probably because all my years were on 16ft fishing boats. hahaha.

There is nothing better than a good bottle of wine... except people to share in the joy of it...

  12. Sounds good, Sandy. You almost made me want to go out and buy a boat!
I do love those yacht parades, we have them here around and along Galveston Bay. It's always accidental when I catch one.
Of course we lack the money and prestige you have in the Oakland area. :)

  14. Very envious over here in NY Sandee. We woke up today with believe it or not, snow flurries, so to say that spring has sprung here, is a bit disturbing. But it's great to live vicariously through your travels over at the yacht club and sounds like you did indeed have a wonderful time. Good for you, you both deserve it.

It's funny you mentioned the silver sponsorship as we would like to invite both you to our NY boating club and would love for you both to become Gold Sponsors, or if you like Platinum Sponsors.

Our club Polish Inny-Navel Rowboat Association (PINYA) would like to invite you to our first annual belly button jamboree which will be held in the basement of the now closed Bamberry Mall here in beautiful Schenectady, NY. Our Gold Sponsorship is only $17.50 or our highest level that of Platinum Sponsors is $2.50. You have to forgive us as we are Polish here and why the highest sponsorship is $15 cheaper then the Gold is perhaps why we only have three members, well actually two members but we thought to include, what we feel is part of our boating family our dog Rain. If you would also like to bring a bottle or some great wine, we are partial to Boone Farm Raspberry Peach or a six pack of Miller Light even, or a can of warm Pabst would even suffice. Actually, Sandee, you can just send the money via my PayPal account listed below and forget about the banquet, seeing how the day we booked it, McDonald's who was catering it, closes at midnight and the party starts at 1am.

But the money will be kind enough and I will simply blow up your picture I have here in my email and make it life size so we can feel as thou your are actually there, even if only in spirit.

    :-)
